Sparse Non-linear Least Squares Optimization for Geometric Vision

چکیده
Several estimation problems in vision involve the minimization of cumulative geometric error using non-linear least-squares fitting. Typically, this error is characterized by the lack of interdependence among certain subgroups of the parameters to be estimated, which leads to minimization problems possessing a sparse structure. Taking advantage of this sparseness during minimization is known to achieve enormous computational savings. Nevertheless, since the underlying sparsity pattern is problem-dependent, its exploitation for a particular estimation problem requires non-trivial implementation effort, which often discourages its pursuance in practice. Based on recent developments in sparse linear solvers, this paper provides an overview of sparseLM, a generalpurpose software package for sparse non-linear least squares that can exhibit arbitrary sparseness and presents results from its application to important sparse estimation problems in geometric vision.

In the area of computer vision and robotics non-linear optimization methods have become an important tool. For instance, all structure from motion approaches apply optimizations such as bundle adjustment (BA). Most often, the structure of the problem is sparse regarding the functional relations of parameters and measurements. The sparsity of the system has to be modeled within the optimization ...

متن کاملFitting a 3D Morphable Model to Edges: A Comparison Between Hard and Soft Correspondences
In this paper we explore the problem of fitting a 3D morphable model to single face images using only sparse geometric features (edges and landmark points). Previous approaches to this problem are based on nonlinear optimisation of an edge-derived cost that can be viewed as forming soft correspondences between model and image edges. We propose a novel approach, that explicitly computes hard cor...
متن کاملA Proximal-Gradient Homotopy Method for the Sparse Least-Squares Problem
We consider solving the 1-regularized least-squares ( 1-LS) problem in the context of sparse recovery for applications such as compressed sensing. The standard proximal gradient method, also known as iterative soft-thresholding when applied to this problem, has low computational cost per iteration but a rather slow convergence rate. Nevertheless, when the solution is sparse, it often exhibits f...
